Tonight we experienced a musical theater production in the great outdoors. The amphitheater was set in the Palo Duro Canyon. The play was called “Texas” and was a history of early Texas to the steam engine days. The actors/actresses/dancers/musicians were incredible. But even more amazing was the backdrop – the canyon is second in size to the Grand Canyon. It’s 1000 feet deep and 120 miles long. As night fell, the “ceiling” of the theater was a black sky filled with stars. The production starts with a lone cowboy on the canyon edge riding by with the Texas flag. Immediately after he rides away, the first big song/dance number starts. The finale was a fireworks show with cowboys on horseback racing through the canyon with Texas and US flags flying.
However, the best line of the night (in my opinion) was spoken by a little boy during intermission. He was telling his parents that the lightening striking the tree scene (a very loud pyrotechnic blast) scared him. He said (with the cutest Texan accent) , “When that tree broke, I felt something hit my stomach. I think it was my heart.” So cute!
And, as if we didn’t have enough excitement, we realized at the bottom of the canyon that our gas tank was reading “fuel level low”. It was a little tense ride (for me anyway) to the top of the canyon and then 15 miles into Amarillo and the nearest gas station. I’ve never been so glad to see overpriced gas in my life!
