Okay, the drawing on the billboard should've been my first clue. It should have said in bold, black print - turn back now if you're afraid of heights. But, it didn't and I didn't. The Royal Gorge is 1000+ feet down. The wooden planks on the suspension bridge creak when you walk on them. The wind was blowing a million miles an hour (see the picture of the Colorado flag on the bridge). Yes, it was a beautiful sight to look down and see the Arkansas River below. However, I'm afraid I didn't get my money's worth at this attraction. I looked down, saw the gorge, and called it good. I did make it all the way across the bridge (of course, that means I also had to go back across the bridge to get back to the car). Ron didn't seem to mind the height or the wind or the way the bridge moved up and down and side to side. He's been here before. On his previous trip, he rode the tram over the gorge to get back to the car. I told him he could do that and I'd take his picture, but after seeing the way the tram car was being moved about in the wind, he made the decision to walk across the bridge with me.
The animal pictures were taken on the far side of the bridge at the "wild animal preserve", which was basically 3 0r 4 big cages. Not quite as exciting as seeing them in the wild, but much easier to photograph. One of the elk was laying next to the fence and his antler tips were sticking out of the fence, so we got to feel the velvet on his antlers. Very "mossy" and soft to the touch. He didn't seem to mind!
After we finished at the Royal Gorge, we drove about an hour to Colorado Springs where we are staying tonight. We plan to get up very early (5 am) and drive to the Garden of the Gods to see the sunrise.
By the way, if you double click on any of the pictures on this blog, they will get bigger.
